Safe & Sturdy Gate July 21, 2010 J. M. Smith (Delaware) Excellent product-taller than most gates and very sturdy. I use as a gate to keep my dogs confined-works great
Easy to install. Sturdy, metal hardware. July 18, 2010 M. Lawson (Bristow, VA) A metal gate with heavy duty hinges and latch are the best you can buy; however, most people don't want to spend big money and time to buy and install one. With that said, most people choose a plastic model. The first gate I bought was plastic and was actually one of the pricer models available. Despite the price, it was a pain in the neck to install and didn't last very long. The plastic hinge components were simply too weak to endure the rigors of two small boys. PLastic just isn't a good material to build heavily used moving parts. Especially not parts that are intended to keep children safe.
I replaced it with this wood model about a year ago. It was a snap to install and the metal hardware is rock solid. The latch mechanism is easy enough for my five year old to open and close, but WAY too hard for our two year old. Thats a good thing for me. The wood is finely sanded and could be stained/painted if so inclined. And the overall design of the gate is more than adequete. There was a recall on this product at some point. I recieved info in the mail from the manufacturer. Luckily, my particular unit was not applicable.
Price was not much of a factor in my decision. I just wanted a gate that was sturdy, and used metal hinges. This gate met my criteria AND was considerably less expensive than other options. A clear winner. I bought another to close off the upsatirs steps as well.
Just do a few minutes of research to ensure you don't get a recalled model (i doubt their even still on the market), and you won't be disappointed.
LOVE IT! July 17, 2010 J. Rysdam (MN) I've had one of these gates for 8 years and LOVE IT! I'm buying another one today!
They are great because they mount right to the wall so they won't tip over like so many other ones do when they are leaned on. And while you might think it will wreck your wall, the other ones have done more damage because they slide and rub all the paint off the wall. I'd rather have a few little holes than the big 2"x5" rubbed off marks on the wall.
They also swing open, but don't have the bar on the ground to trip on or stub toes like the other kinds do. They are also just hard enough for little kids to not be able to open, but easy enough for older kids and adults to open.
I have 4 kids and also do foster care, so this gate has been used and abused by up to 10 kids at a time, and is still in great shape :o)
I also have a special needs child and know that no matter how old she is, this gate will work for her to keep her safe :o)
TOP NOTCH GATE July 11, 2010 BADDOG10 BEST GATE EVER EASY TO USE. SIMPLE TO INSTALL. WHAT CAN I SAY. JUST BUY IT
Decent gate, perhaps not the most attractive July 5, 2010 Travis L This gate is completely adequate. The latch mechanism can be hard at times to unlock; I attribute it to variations in technique. (My wife disagrees.) There's a fair amount of slop in between the two gate halves. I plan on adding felt to take up the space.
This gate is not as attractive as others. It doesn't self-close, but I didn't want the bar that runs along the floor that's part of the self-closers.
If you have a baseboard, don't forget to account for the bottom rail holder when planning the height. I had to remove a section of baseboard. If you don't, you'll probably miss the recommended height stated in the manual.
I would buy this again (I might for the bottom of the stairs), and I would recommend this gate to others.
