Extremely versatile - This has replaced my George Foreman March 11, 2010 Christina Batten (Rochester, NY USA) I absolutely love this Griddler! The dishwasher safe grilling plates are a plus. The enclosed booklet contained recipes I'll probably never make but they were helpful for figuring out which temperature settings I should use for my own recipes (for instance, all Paninis are cooked on high using the Griddler/Panini setting). Speaking of which, I made my first Panini's 'ever' tonight for my boyfriend and his kids and they were a huge hit! Here's the recipe I whipped together if you'd like to give it a try :) Sorry, I don't have measurements, just eyeball the ingredients to your own preference (it's a 'sandwich' people...)
4 Sandwich sized Ciabatta Loafs
Lemon Artichoke Pesto
Turkey Cold Cuts
Roasted Pimento Pepper (cut in slices)
4 Slices Provolone Cheese
Olive Oil
Cut the Ciabatta Loafs in half and brush Olive Oil on the outside. Spread Lemon Artichoke Pesto on the inside of all loafs (top and bottom halves). Layer on Turkey Cold Cuts, One Slice of Provolone and top with sliced Roasted Pimento Pepper. Add tops and place on pre-heated Griddler (Panini setting @ High heat). Close lid and press gently on handle for 30 seconds. Allow to cook 6 minutes. Enjoy!
Oh... and I'm sure it's in the manual somewhere of which I didn't read, but I touched the top of the lid after it was finished pre-heating because I was curious if it was 'hot'. It was hot. Don't touch it. Use the handle ;).
Removable Griddle Plates Make Cleanup Quick and Easy! March 2, 2010 Avid Reviewer (San Jose, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Cuisinart Griddler has a generous cooking surface for cooking individual or family meals. It has some nice features that make it a real delight to use - and cleanup it a snap too!
Features
--------
- Non-Stick Griddle Plates
There are 2 griddle plates - one for each side of the griddle. I used the egg test - widely accepted as the gold standard for gauging how well the non-stick surfaces on cookware perform - and the griddle plates passed spectacularly.
- Reversible Griddle Plates
The griddle plates are reversible. You can use the griddle (flat) side or grilled (grooved) side. The plates can be snapped on or removed with incredible ease.
- Large Cooking Surface
The cooking surface on each plate measures 9" x 12".
- Easy Maintenance
The removable Griddle Plates Make Cleanup Quick and Easy! The drip tray can be easily removed and cleaned as well.
The plates and the tray are dishwasher-safe. The non-stick surface works very well so stuck-on food will not be a problem. A combed scraper for cleaning the grooved surface of the grill plate is included.
- Two Temperature Controls
There are 3 knobs:
-> The left-most and the right-most knobs control temperature. The left-most knob has graduations that run from 200 °F to 425 °F. The right-most knob has graduations that go from Warm to Sear.
-> The middle knob is a selector that determines which knob (i.e. the left-most knob or the right-most knob) controls the temperature. It is also used to turn off the unit.
The Warm setting is 200 °F and the Sear setting is 425 °F. In effect, the left-most and the right-most knobs perform the same function. Isn't that redundant, you say? Well, I actually like the idea - I think of the left-most and the right-most knobs as "presets" that I'm able to select with the middle knob.
- Press or Griddle or Grill
(1) As a press, the griddle can cook your burgers or panini on both sides at the same time. The double-hinge end can expand to adjust to thicker cuts of meat (such as fillet mignon) or other bulky foods.
(2) The clamshell opens up completely for a full Griddle or Grill. We're talking 200 sq in. of cooking surface!
Aesthetics
-----------
The brushed aluminum and gray exterior is beautiful and will fit in with most kitchen décor. The griddle is fairly large and imposing and just screams commercial grade quality cookware! (It's slightly larger than a George Foreman.)
Conclusion
----------
Cuisinart have themselves a winner! The Cuisinart Griddler is practical for cooking both single and family meals (a booklet containing some delicious recipes is included). It is definitely a worthwhile investment if you have a busy schedule and are looking for a way to cut cooking and cleanup times. Highly recommended.
Luuuuuv this Griddler! Smart, Easy to Use and Fixes Former Problems! March 2, 2010 javajunki 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This Cuisinart Griddler is something special...not only does it take up suprisingly little space but it's a vast improvement over former models. Here is a quick list of the things I really like about this model:
1. Small footprint. We have an average sized kitchen but do a lot of cooking so space always seems to be at a premium. This unit takes supriringly little room to store but opens up to provide a full-sized grill unit.
2. Easy to clean. The claims are true...this is very easy to clean with a heavy-duty non-stick surface. I'm not a huge fan of non-stick but in this case, make an exception.
3. Simple but responsive controls. Three controls and that's it! Easy to see and even easier to "feel" so there isn't a need to fiddle around while cooking.
4. Interchangeable. Both sides are easily removed and can be set in any desired combination (grill, griddle, grill/griddle combo both up/down).
5. New and improved drip system. The old model that looks very similar to this unit had a side drain that was messy and inconvenient. No such mess on this unit. A small drain leads from the back of the unit to underneath where it's captured by a built-in container that can be easily accessed from the side of the unit.
6. Floating handle and other features continue to do a superb job with features normally found in much larger units.
Bottom line - great value! Easy to use, easy to clean and super results!
What a great grill March 2, 2010 TRFB 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall this is a very easy to use product.
Durability:
The grill is very easy to take a part and was the grills. It is of a stainless steel construction on the top which makes cleaning a whole lot easier. Each grill plate is double sided. One side is used for grilling steaks and allow the grease to drain from the meat. The other side is flat for pancakes. We used it for quesadillas and it worked great.
Usability:
The three knobs in the front allow you to set the temprature, type of grilling you do and are easy to set. This grill is a light weight construction making it easy to carry anywhere. The grill cleaner allows you to quickly scrape away the food when cleaning and allows ease of washing. Very handy. There is a small cup in the back where the grease and fat drain into. The grill easily opens up to reveal two flat griddles. We actually made breakfast with eggs, pancakes and bacon. This is our usual breakfast on Saturdays and we didn't have to use our three different pans like we normally do. We cut down three pans down to using just this grill.
Cuisinart upgraded the Griddler, and it's better than ever February 28, 2010 S. Harrison (Clements, CA United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought a G4 Griddler from Amazon in 2005, and used it a couple of times a week (at least) until it had to be put out to pasture in 2010 due to failure of the non-stick coating on the plates. (The coating started to bubble and peel, and no one wants that in their food...) I loved it. (See my review of the Cuisinart GR-4 Griddler Stainless-Steel 4-in-1 Grill/Griddle and Panini Press) It was still working great, but replacement plates were not available.
I was elated when offered the opportunity to review its smarter younger brother, the GR-4NAM Griddler. I could hardly wait for it to get here and run it through its paces.
At first glance, the GR-4NAM looks virtually identical to the G4. However, closer inspection reveals that it has been totally redesigned, and for the better.
Improvement: The grease catcher used to be a little cup that had to be set under a spout on the side of the bottom plate. If it was positioned incorrectly, (or forgotten about), greased dripped out on the counter. The grease catcher is now integrated into the Griddler as a drawer-like device that can be pulled out to clean, and then put back in place for the next use.
Improvement: The G4 had two sets of plates - one flat set, one ridged set (for paninis). There is now one reversible set of plates (ridged on one side, flat on the other), and therefore no need to find a storage place for the plates not in use. The new plates have a good substantial weight. I don't have the old ones here for comparison, but the quality of the plates certainly was not cheapened.
Improvement: It used to be a little tricky to put the plates in place and to remove them. There was also a difference between the top plate and the bottom, so you had to be careful not to try to put them in the wrong way. The plates now have an identical shape, so they are interchangeable, and the release buttons activate a spring-loaded mechanism that pops the plate loose for easy removal.
Now, to see how it cooks: The Griddler takes about as long to warm up as a good-quality waffle iron. Just when you start to get impatient with it, it's ready.
The first thing that I cooked was a no-no in the eyes of Cuisinart - a bone-in, skin-on leg and thigh chicken quarter. Too thick, they say. HA! says I, because I am a bit of an anarchist. I marinated the chicken in olive oil and rosemary, heated the Griddler to Medium. I cooked it on the panini plates because I love those little fake barbeque stripes across my food. It worked just fine. (I should have taken a picture, it came out looking beautiful. But I was hungry.)
Word of warning: Do not cook thick or fatty meat on High - you will get grease spatters all over the place. Medium works just fine in such instances.
I discovered from my old Griddler that when cooking meat it's best to turn off the heat before it's done, and let it finish cooking with the residual heat in the plates. That way the meat does not get overdone.
For clean-up, I let the plates cool down, and then put a wet paper towel across the bottom plate and close the lid and let it sit for a while. The dampness softens anything that is stuck to the plates, and then it can be easily washed off with a sudsy sponge or dish wand.
Today for lunch, I made myself a sandwich with sliced sourdough bread, cooked sliced chicken breast, fresh grated parmesan cheese and dried basil. I followed the panini directions in the small cookbook that comes with the Griddler. Well, I sort of followed the directions... Cuisinart recommends brushing the outside of the sandwich with olive oil. I prefer to use melted butter on panini because it makes the sandwich crisper.
I preheated the Griddler on High, placed the sandwich inside, and applied light pressure for about 30 seconds, and then let it cook. The directions say to cook panini for about 4 -5 minutes, but my sandwich was ready to eat in 2 minutes. Maybe the butter makes the bread brown faster than olive oil.
In any case, it was beautiful - evenly browned, crunchy and delicious, and I did take a picture (see product images).
How durable will the GR-4NAM be? Good question. From everything that I can see so far, Cuisinart has only made the Griddler better. But time is the real test of quality. I will report back from time to time regarding durability.
Right now, I'd say this looks like an excellent buy.
